| Mei-O and Pei in front of the Beijing
railway station. We went there to buy our train tickets to Chengde. |

Someone told us to be sure to see the flag
raising ceremony that took place on Tiananmen Square at sunrise, so early one morning
around 6:00, Mei-O and I went there to watch it. The viewing area was so packed with people
we couldn't get close enough to get a good look, but at least we did see the flag going
up to live military band music. This was taken shortly after the ceremony and after the
crowd dispersed.

| And so was this. This picture gives a better idea of the early
morning hour! |

| Mei-O, Kuan, and Pei in Tianhecheng,
one of the restaurants we liked best. We visited it several times while in Beijing. |

 |
| On the train to Chengde. It was about a four hour ride, and I couldn't
take my eyes off the scenery passing by: mountainous regions, small rural farming
communites with people working the land by hand, numerous factories, etc., including a
glimpse of the Great Wall rolling though the mountains. |

| On the train, seats face each other. This is the couple that sat across
from us. Mei-O struck up a friendly conversation with them. |
