Our Taiwan Trip, March 19th - April 2nd, 2011
Eating

Mouse over the picture for a closer shot.

Choudoufu ('stinky' tofu) is one of my favorite foods to eat in Taiwan. We found this great choudoufu stand (on the right in this picture) at the site of the bustling morning Zhongshan market, which is remarkably quiet after noon. The stand, run by a single young woman who, at times, got extremely busy with several customers waiting while she prepared order after order, opens in the late afternoon (to catch all the hungry school kids as they walk home from school) and stays open most of the night. At about $1.00 for five choudoufu squares, this deep-fried snack, served with sliced cucumber and pickled cabbage, was some of the best choudoufu I've ever had! And yes, those are pigs' hind-quarters hanging in the background over my right shoulder.

We ate here several times this trip, but this wasn't the only choudoufu I had. I had a really bad barbecued version for a snack in Danshui (barbecued, ugh! never again!) and, one afternoon for lunch, Mingshun brought some home for us, which was actually pretty good. This is certainly one of the things I just cannot get enough of while in Taiwan and miss the most when we return to the states!
