Mei-O and I went to Taiwan for three weeks (April 26th through May 17th), mainly to visit her parents who are getting along in years (her father turned 80 in 2002, a major milestone in a Chinese person's life). We stayed with her younger brother Ming-shun and his family in Taiping, a bustling city just east of Taichung in central Taiwan, in the foothills of the mountain range that runs down Taiwan's center. Mei-O's mother and father live with Ming-shun and babysit for his two kids, Chia-chen (age 4 when we were there) and Chia-hsin (age 3).
Ming-shun's house is in a gated housing community where no cars are allowed (there is underground parking) making for a very quiet and relaxing environment. The house is a four story house, with our (and Mei-O's parents') bedroom on the third floor.
A 10 minute walk to the bus stop allowed us to catch a bus to downtown Taichung, while a 15 minute walk took us to a bustling marketplace filled with numerous stores and restaurants (where we went most mornings for breakfast and shopping). Unfortunately, walking in Taiwan, where sidewalks are often non-existent or blocked by parked cars and/or motorcycles and where traffic is chaotic, is pretty dangerous and stressful.
While we were there, Mei-O's youngest sister, Mei-hui, was busy running her campaign for a city district representative seat in Taichung's local government. There are several pictures of her and her campaign activities in these pages. A few weeks after we left, she lost the election.
Having been to Taiwan so often, and having all sorts of pictures of it, I took very few
general ('touristy') pictures. Most of my pictures were of Mei-O's family, and many of
them are featured in these web pages. While they are of very little interest to the
casual viewer, they are precious to Mei-O and her family members.
